Charlotte Salt

I create ceramic work that is tactile and intuitively-made, employing techniques that are unique to the hand-building processes.

The development of work is experimental; each piece is actively influenced by my interpretation and understanding of each making process or learnt technique. I enjoy the meditative, grounding processes of handling the clay, it’s a rhythmic physical act involving the senses. I feel my way with the material, pinching and pressing the surface, leaving visible fingertip traces, sometimes inlaying with different coloured clays, smoothing, polishing and re-working, digging in, rebuilding then eroding, forming objects that seem to have been unearthed from old civilisations or could have tumbled ashore, shaped by the pull of the elements.

I draw on wide-ranging influences, ancient ephemera and my passion for collecting found fragments and objects; natural and manmade, building on contextual associations, evoking memories and exploring the transient nature of life concurrent with the longevity of cultural memory
