Heather Niven

Ceramic Sculpture and Paintings

My work is inspired by nature, folklore and the space between reality and imagination.  The power of storytelling within pictures and sculpture, but leaving enough space for the viewer to bring their own sense of meaning to the work too.

I have been painting for 25 years and sculpting for the last 5 of those years, and I have found translating work into 3D hugely satisfying. I love to use more experimental techniques like raku and saggar, pit firing, as well as using more mainstream firing methods (which are better for outdoor pieces).

My work has recently been shown at Newby Hall as part of their sculpture walk, in the Malton Sculpture Trail 2022, at previous Ryedale Open Studios and the last North Yorkshire Open Studios as well as further afield at the Fronteer Gallery in Sheffield and the Art& show in York.
