Jayne Hutchinson Raine

Drawing, Painting and Printmaking

I produce work inspired by my life in the North. From places visited, people and animals met, stories shared, and history and culture enriched in this, a celebration of that North.

I work from subjects that I love. The landscape and animals that are part of my life: from my home at the edge of the Wolds, over the moors and hills to the sea's edge. Combined with memories of my family and friends, the history and traditions that enrich my life and fuel my work. I incorporate images of my surroundings to invoke a strong sense of place. This is where I am.

Varying in scale I mostly work in pencil, watercolour paint and linocuts, but this year I have begun to work more with printed images, using collographs and dry point prints on paper.

I like to work outside, recording what I see through paint and pencil in sketchbooks and through photographs to capture what I have seen, heard and felt. From these observations I then work in my studio at home to visually capture my findings.

My practice is based around my life in the North and a remembered landscape that I am pleased to be able to share through the Open Studio experience.

Further instructions: On entering the lower end of the village go past The Burythorpe House Hotel on the right, over small crossroads to Birdsall and Burythorpe Church and park outside the Church Hall on the left. Cobweb Cottage is on the opposite side of the road, the left-hand end cottage in a row of three old sandstone cottages. Look for the Cobweb gate. Up the steps and follow signs to a path to the left of the cottage to the rear of the cottage. Mount the steps and go through a gate in the garden and you will see the studio at the bottom of the garden.
