Layla Khoo
Mixed Media Artist
I am a multimedia 3D artist, specialising in ceramics and site-specific installations.
My work is responsive – responding to ideas, events or collections, considering how this response can be represented in a contemporary and conceptual way within the context of my material practice. I have a particular interest in using my artistic practice to find new ways to look at and interpret heritage sites and collections, finding ways (often through participatory works) to encourage viewers to examine their own relationship with, and find ways to relate to, these places and objects. The greatest joy and challenge I find in my work is in striving to produce something which can spark a connection of contemporary relevance in an object or site which may otherwise be overlooked.
I often choose to create work in ceramic for it’s broad range of historical connotations - from everyday tableware to satire and sculpture, but rather than limiting my practice entirely to one medium, I prefer to leave myself the freedom to adapt to the individual needs of each project. My works are entirely research led, whether that be studying a site, a collection or a community. I approach all projects with a catalyst starting point allowing the discoveries of these explorations to inform and determine the final outcomes.
There may the opportunity during Open Studios to purchase one off test pieces and elements of prior exhibitions and to take a look at current works in progress on ongoing projects
