Ros Walker
Ceramics and Painting
My work takes inspiration from the local landscape and uses a variety of materials from the immediate locality including the earthenware clay from my garden which was used extensively in this area by the Romans. This forms the basis of some of my more experimental, sculptural ceramic pieces in combination with my handmade paper fibres made from local vegetation to create a unique strong and versatile paper clay mixture. I also use ancient and alternative firing techniques such as raku and pit firing in my ceramic work, alongside the more standard electric kiln firing for my colourful range of functional glazed stoneware tableware.
My mixed media landscape paintings are a natural extension of the textural ceramic pieces, often incorporating found natural materials to create interesting surface depth and texture. Both my 2D and 3D artwork seeks to explore the essence of the beauty and transient fragility of life through the observation of the changing seasons and life and death cycles of the natural world and is firmly rooted in the local North Yorkshire landscape.
