Beyond Wiseman

BEYOND is about sharing the artistic legacy of Philip Wiseman, and his innate talent for capturing colour, light, mood and moment, with those who want to be moved and captivated.

 

A Yorkshire-born electrician, Phil found his purpose in painting. Driven to research and learn, he was a self-taught scholar of the techniques of Carravagio and Canaletto, Picasso and Monet. In 1997, he enrolled in a fine art course at the College of Ripon and York St John, now York St John University.

 

Learning everything he could, he took inspiration from the Italian renaissance, impressionism and contemporary art, mixing styles and moving between them. 

 

When he died from cancer in 2016, Phil left behind hundreds of pieces of art. Some were sold to art dealers, some passed on to friends and family. The rest were boxed away, for a time. Many were never finished, incomplete impressions from an electrician who manipulated light in life and on canvas.

 

Now, Phil’s wife Teena is unlocking the door, dusting off the boxes, and shining a light on his artistic legacy. From deep, moody landscapes to evocative abstract pieces, Tuscan sunsets, to Yorkshire streets, Phil’s work is being opened up to the wider world. Though we know the stories behind some of the artworks, some remain a mystery, open to interpretation and imagination.

 

BEYOND is about Phil’s art taking on a new life; about the meaning people find in his work.

 

His art moves beyond him now, and beyond time, as his original pieces which drew on present moments and inspiration from the past, become part of future stories.
